Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland Paris is getting ready to blast to the past. After nearly a decade with the current Star Wars overlay, which was originally marked as a temporary experience, the ride is returning to its original 1995 design and will be renamed as Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune.
For Star Wars fans, the timing stings. Disneyland Paris promised a Star Wars land back in 2018, a promise that’s quietly gone unmentioned since.
Star Wars offerings have kept expanding in smaller ways including the addition of new characters and special events like the Starport Lounge for Star Wars Day 2026, but the D23:Ultimate Fan Event 2026 came and went without any word on the bigger promise.
Now the resort’s most visible Star Wars presence is being dialled back instead.
What’s actually changing when Space Mountain reopens
Guests visiting throughout 2027 won’t miss out on Hyperspace Mountain in its current form. The ride will be open for one last year of secret missions for the Rebel Alliance before closing at the end of 2027 for a refurbishment lasting several months.
During the closure, Walt Disney Imagineering Paris will restore De la Terre à la Lune’s original vision, transporting guests to “an idealized period of the very first travels to the Moon,” inspired by Jules Vernes novel of the same name, and in the steampunk style of Discoveryland.
The attraction’s indoor sets, props, queue, and effects are all being reworked, alongside more than 30 years of technological advances the ride has picked up along the way, including exterior dome lighting installed in 2025.
Keith Rector, Senior Manager of Creative Art Direction at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, called it both “an honour and an exciting challenge” to reimagine the attraction for a new generation.
Disneyland Paris has also confirmed this sits within a wider “New Magic” initiative, a programme aimed at refreshing classic attractions across the resort.
The recent scenery updates on Rivers of the Far West fall under the same banner, with more projects still to come.
How fans are reacting to Hyperspace Mountain’s closure
There has been marked demand for the return of the original overlay since Star Wars was incorporated in 2017. But the news that it’s finally happening hasn’t landed as a universal celebration.
Reaction on fan forums is genuinely split three ways. Some are simply relieved it’s finally happening.

Others are more conflicted. Hardcore Star Wars fans are mourning the loss of one of only two Star Wars-themed rides in the parks, the other being a 3D experience with its own motion-sickness caveats that isn’t really a substitute.

There’s also a more sceptical voice in the mix, questioning what’s actually being fixed. One reply dismissed the celebration outright, pointing out fans are cheering for “a 30-year-old janky and painful Vekoma steel coaster” with no retracking confirmed alongside the retheme.
Some reactions go further than the ride itself, into what it might mean for Discoveryland as a whole, with fans pointing to the land’s original all-in Jules Verne theming being gradually crowded out by unrelated additions over time.

For many guests, Hyperspace Mountain is the only version of this ride they’ve ever known. Returning to De la Terre à la Lune leaves genuine unknowns. And with the ride closing at the end of 2027 for a refurbishment of several months, guests could be waiting up to two years from now to find out whether it recaptures the magic long-time fans remember.
